Trump’s new solar tariff policy will result in tens of thousands of unemployed

On the 22nd, US Trade Representative Robert Lethechzer announced that Trump approved tariffs on imported solar panels up to 30% and will impose import quotas on large domestic washing machines and impose duties of up to 50%.

The statement by the U.S. trade representative said the Trump administration intends to safeguard the interests of American workers, farmers, and businesses. The U.S. media reported that while Trump restricted imports of solar panels from China, which is a major importer of US solar panels, the new policy might also cause unemployment and economic instability in the United States.

The US Solar Energy Industries Association warned that the move by President Donald Trump to impose high tariffs on imported solar panels will result in tens of thousands of people being unemployed and raising the cost of solar power, which will cut billions of dollars in potential investment in this area. Their opposition statement said Trump's move to impose tariffs would not only raise the price of US solar products but also lead to the loss of 48,000 to 63,000 US workers in the solar industry and ultimately to the interests of workers in the U.S. economy and related industries crisis.

In addition, South Korea and Mexico will be the two countries most affected after levying washing machine tariffs. Earlier, the US home appliance giant company Whirlpool repeatedly asked the U.S. government to investigate Samsung and LG dumping washing machines in the United States. According to the global media, the trade measure is aimed at these two major Korean home appliance companies. US media said the future price of washing machines in the United States will also face rising.

From the above analysis, we can tell that this new tariff policy might have the opposite negative effect on the industry.
